Henry
Luce, the publisher of the successful Time
Magazine, started the Life Magazine in 1936. Based on similar
picture magazines published in Germany during the 1920s this weekly
news magazine made full use of America's leading photojournalists
such as Margaret Bourke-White, Carl
Mydans, Grace Robertson, Constance
Larrabee, Gordon Parks and Esther
Bubley.
Life Magazine provided impressive coverage of the Second
World War, the Korean War and the Vietnam
War. However, sales began to fall and it ceased to be published
as a weekly magazine after 1972.
