Edward
Joseph Hart was born in Jersey
City on 25th March, 1893. After graduating from St. Peter's College
he worked as secretary to the Excise Commission (1913-16) and was
chief field deputy of the Internal Revenue Bureau (1916-21). Hart
attended Georgetown University (1921-24) and after being admitted
to the bar practiced law in Jersey City.
A member of the Democratic Party,
Hart was elected to Congress in 1935. In 1945 he was appointed chairman
of the Un-American Activities Committee
(HUAC).
Hart retired from Congress in 1955 and became a member of the State
Board of Public Utility Commissioners. Edward Joseph Hart died in
West Allenhurst, New Jersey, on 20th April, 1961.
