Emanuel Celler, the son of a shop owner, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 6th May, 1888. After attending the Boys' High School in Brooklyn he worked as a wine salesman while studying at the Columbia University Law School. In 1912 Celler was admitted to the bar and began working as a lawyer in New York City.
