Belmont was
born in Alzei, Germany in 1816. He worked
for Rothschilds in Frankfurt before working for the company in Italy
and Cuba. In 1837 he emigrated to the United States where he became
a successful banker in New York. Belmont,
who became president of the American Jockey Club, died in 1890.
