Enoch
Edwards was born in Staffordshire on 10th April, 1852. He began work
in a coal mine at the age of ten. An active trade unionist, Edwards
became secretary of the North Staffordshire Miners' Federation in
1877.
Edwards, who was treasurer of the Miners' Federation
of Great Britain (1889-1894), was elected president of the organisation
in 1904. An unsuccessful parliamentary candidate in 1900, Edwards
won Hanley for the Labour Party in the 1906
General Election. Enoch Edwards held the seat until his death
on 28th June 1912.
